How do you install a subsea anchoring system in Cameroon?

In July 2017, Jumbo Offshore executed the first phase of a two-phase project for Golar LNG. This phase involved the transportation and installation of a soft yoke anchor system. The subsequent hook-up of a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit to the subsea anchor system – the second phase of the project – will happen at the end of the year 2017.

Here’s how

Phase one of this exciting project involved careful planning by the Jumbo team for the transportation of the subsea anchor system from Poland to Cameroon on board the MV Fairplayer. The Fairplayer is a J-Class offshore installation vessel that has a lifting capacity of 1000t offshore, is equipped with a DP2 class dynamic positioning system, and can go up to speeds of 17 knots. Installing the Hilli Episeyo subsea soft yoke anchoring system took place off the shores of Cameroon’s South Province. After mobilization of all personnel on board in Douala, the Fairplayer sailed to the Kribi field, the future location of the Hilli Episeyo, in order to install the anchor system. Apart from the heavy lifts (Anchor Base (250t) and Soft Yoke (700t)) piles were installed to secure the anchor system to the seabed. The flexible riser and umbilical of the system were installed after the soft yoke.

Robert Bos, Golar LNG representative says: “We are very happy with the quality of Jumbo’s work. Excellent preparation and a very capable vessel and crew resulted in the safe and successful installation of the soft yoke mooring system. We are looking forward to our continued cooperation in the upcoming hook-up phase.”

Subsea anchoring divers

Jumbo Offshore contracted N-Sea, a subsea IMR provider for diving and ROV support, to assist with the subsea installation of the soft yoke system as well as the Hook-up of the Hilli Episeyo. The activities N-Sea has performed on the anchor system in the first phase includes seabed measuring, mattress placement, anchor base and pile positioning support and pile sleeve sediment removal. Moreover N-Sea were the eyes of the project during the lifting of the Soft Yoke on the anchor base and the delicate installation of the riser and umbilical.

N-Sea group commercial director, Gary Thirkettle says: “We are delighted to be supporting Jumbo Offshore with the expertise of N-Sea’s dive team. This contract award represents not only our first partnership with Jumbo, but also our first project offshore in Cameroon.”

When Jumbo continues with this project later this year, the same emphasis will be on safety and operational excellence in order to keep the project within budget and bring it to completion successfully.

Jumbo offshore has built up a solid reputation as a combined transport and installation contractor for the offshore industry.  As well as installing subsea structures and mooring we have installed jackets, topsides, and wind turbine foundations.
