Jumbo successfully transports two new ship loaders from China to South Africa
Jumbo Shipping recently successfully transported two new ship loaders from China to Richards Bay, South Africa for Sandvik. Our J-Type vessels, MV Jumbo Javelin and MV Jumbo Jubilee were both involved with transporting the two ship loaders, weighing 830 tonnes each, from Tianjin, China to Richards Bay, South Africa. Jumbo was involved throughout the design and construction phase of the ship loaders to ensure their safe, efficient and successful transportation.
This project required detailed engineering because of the width of the cargo rail span exceeding the breadth of the ship. With the vessels ability to sail with open hatches, the main deck hatch covers were used to breech the extension and balance the outreach. The ship loaders were loaded and discharged using the so called “forklift method” consisting of two lifting beams firmly connected to each other acting as a lifting platform underneath the cargo. This is a flexible system where the distance between the two cranes can be adjusted using a modular spreader beam. Rails were built on deck so that the ship loaders could be placed directly in position on the quay.
Jumbo has enabled the bulk terminal to increase their ship loading capacity from 8500 tonnes per hour to approx. 12000 tonnes per hour.
