Jumbo marks its leading industry position in Heavy Lift Shipping with yet another world record
On 15th October 2016, the two flagships of Dutch heavy lift shipping specialist Jumbo Shipping, MV Jumbo Kinetic and MV Fairmaster completed the transportation of four pile clusters and two buoyancy modules for the Johan Sverdrup project in Norway.
With a lead time of over one year, Jumbo´s project management team together with the experienced crews on board planned and executed this project safely, as planned and well within budget.
Jumbo was contracted to transport in total four pile clusters with a unit weight of about 1200 metric tons and two buoyancy modules of about 1400 metric tons unit weight from Dubai to Norway. The two key elements for the success of the operation were careful planning, in order to schedule the arrival of the two strongest heavy lift vessels in the world to Abu Dhabi and tailor made engineering solutions, to accommodate and handle these extreme units. Utilizing the unique single hook lifting capacities of 1500 metric tons per crane, Jumbo´s engineering team developed the unique solution: all units with weights exceeding the 1000 metric ton mark were planned to be lifted as a single hook lift.
Jumbo´s K-3000 class vessels mark the peak of the current worlds heavy lift shipping fleet. The two sister vessels, Jumbo Kinetic and Fairmaster feature each two Huisman Mast Cranes with a lifting capacity of 1500 metric tons and a combined lifting capacity of up to 3000 metric tons. Jumbo has consequently followed through with proven concepts of earlier in-house designed vessels and created these revolutionary new ships which redefine the world of heavy lift shipping, yet again. Key elements of the designs are remotely operated rotating mast cranes, bridge forward, shallow draft capabilities, twin props for enhanced maneuverability, floatable hatch covers and off course ice classed Finnish 1A.
The Record (s)
The discharging operations in Norway, with exceptionally good weather and a highly motivated project team, were going extremely well. MV Jumbo Kinetic was the first of the two sisters alongside to offload her cargo with the last unit on deck: The buoyancy module. After the massive rigging for the aft-crane was prepared and connected to the cargo, the moment of truth was there. The cargo was hooked up and the load cells visualized what had been engineered for the past months: a new world record: 1346 metric tons (including 120 metric tons of rigging) with a single hook lift on a heavy lift transport vessel. After the cargo was safely positioned onto the quay, the excitement was big. Sita Verburg, Jumbo´s project engineer commented: “We only realized that we have been engineering and planning a new world record a few days before the actual execution. This makes us even more proud of what we have accomplished. Such a great moment!”
Earlier this year, on the 26th June 2016, MV Fairmaster performed a record breaking tandem lift of a 1,911t weighing fractionator for the RAPID project in Tanjung Setapa, Malaysia on MV Fairmaster. The successful completion of this project marked a new record for Jumbo and its K-class vessels.
Jumbo congratulates their entire team with a successful completion of a challenging project and join the crew on site in celebrating this record.
