Jumbo transports 1,600t pipe lay tower to South Korea
Jumbo has successfully completed the transportation of the first of two flexible pipe lay towers to Okpo, South Korea, for its client, Real/Imeca. Imeca received the order to develop the flexible pipelay system for the newly constructed Technip Odebrecht JV* pipe lay support vessels. The Joint Venture will charter the vessels to Petrobras, who will use them to install umbilical and flexible flowlines and risers to connect subsea wells to floating production units in waters up to over 2,500m deep offshore Brazil, including in the pre-salt area.
The project involved a series of four voyages for Jumbo, plus the engineering of a suitable outrigger frame, specific to the project, to handle the shipments. The initial phase was the collection of the first of two base structures from Gydnia, Poland. Jumbo chartered a vessel to undertake the first stage of the project, as, after the award of contract there was a limited space of time before project activity commenced. This meant that it was not possible to schedule one of Jumbo’s J-class vessels.
After collection in Gydnia, the base structure was positioned in a specially reinforced area within the port of La Rochelle. This was necessary because, once fully dressed, the total weight of the tower would reach 1,600t, resting on a footprint of approximately only 17x15m. After discharge it took 11 weeks to fully dress the tower. The next stage of the project saw the collection of the second base structure from Gydnia, by the Jumbo Jubilee. Upon discharging in La Rochelle, the Jumbo Jubilee was able to collect and transport the completed first tower to Okpo. The scheduling of voyages ensured the project was undertaken in the most cost efficient way, avoiding the costs of mobilising a second vessel.
Loading the fully dressed tower represented a considerable challenge. Not only was lifting a 1600t unit at an outreach of 17m required, but also the port of La Rochelle is very exposed to swell. However Jumbo Jubilee proved more than capable of handling both. The vessel, equipped with dual 900t mast cranes, has the capability to lift up to 1,800 tons. Due to the height and weight of the tower it was positioned on the vessel’s tanktop, which is strong enough to safely distribute the 1,600t load at the relatively small footprint presented. The transportation of the tower was also made possible by the J-class’ ability to sail with open hatches. The J-class is purpose built for challenges such as this and its attributes were key to the success of this project.
Upon arrival in Okpo the tower was unloaded by the shipyard’s own floating crane and is now awaiting installation on-board the PLSV.
In addition to the vessel’s capability the successful, safe execution of the project was due to the close working relationship between the respective project managers and engineering departments of Jumbo and Imeca.
